In November 2008, Governor Pawlenty unveiled his Green Jobs Investment Initiative, and as part of that initiative created a new Clean & Green division within the Minnesota Cup competition. The Clean & Green division will help move Minnesota to the forefront of the “clean” revolution by advancing breakthrough ideas and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in clean technologies, including conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, biofuels, and sustainable products and chemicals.

Awards and Benefits Include:

Clean & Green Division Winner:

All finalists:

  • Featured in a Twin Cities Business supplement (Fall 2009).
  • Detailed feedback of their final written entry and oral presentation.
  • The opportunity to present their plan through an oral presentation to the entire review board.

All semi-finalists:

All entrants:

  • Access to "The Minnesota Cup Hill Resource Center" from the James J. Hill Reference Library to assist with their plan
  • One year, complimentary subscription to Twin Cities Business.
  • A valuable experience that will help all entrants as they work on their ventures.

How to enter:


The deadline for the 2009 competition was midnight, Friday May 22nd.

First Round:
Deadline for submitted online applications is 11:59 PM on May 22, 2009.

Second Round:
Clean & Green semi-finalists will be announced on June 15th and will be invited to a reception at the James J. Hill Library on June 24th.

Semi-finalists will be asked to write a in depth business plan by July 24th.

Third Round:
After the review board has reviewed all semi-finalists business plans, 3 finalists will be announced on August 20th.

Finalists will make oral presentations to the review board on September 1st. The 2009 Clean & Green winner will be announced at this time.

Grand Prize:
The winner of the Clean & Green Division will compete against five other Minnesota Cup division winners for the Minnesota Cup grand prize on September 10.
